I received a sewing machine about 5 years ago as a gift and never touched the thing. The idea of threading the machine and learning the many functions was such a daunting idea. Well this X-mas I finally decided to open it and give it a whirl. What inspired me to do this? Well after receiving the beautiful chevron skirt that SPG made, I got motivated and wanted to make my own skirt!
My favorite skirt of all time is a black circle skirt from F21 that I have worn many times (here, here & here) on this blog. I wanted to duplicate something similar, but knew that my sewing skills were very limited. I made a similar style and decided to forgo the pleating to make my first sewing project less tedious.
I'm pretty meticulous when it comes to details. I had to make this skirt 3 times before I was satisfied with the results! The first time I made this skirt, the bottom hem kept on bunching. The 2nd time, I did a horrible job on the invisible zipper. I think I'm most happy with the 3rd try, although there are still many errors.
I posted close up pictures below and you could see the mistakes. The most obvious is the zipper as the placement should have been placed higher because it doesn't reach the band and you could see a little peek-a-boo hole. I also didn't do a good job of keeping the stitching straight, but that is less evident in the photos. There are a many issues, but I won't go into all of them and am motivated to improve my sewing skills and make garments less "homemade" looking in the future.
Nine West Flax Leopard Pumps . Size down 1/2 size from my normal 5.5 to a size 5.
Little mistakes aside, this is amazing considering that you didn't have any experience! Looking forward to seeing what else you can do as your skills improve :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on a really good job on your skirt. I also have issues with zippers and decided to make wrap skirts instead. Much easier for me. Good luck with your next project.
ReplyDeleteWow, great job Ping! I love it!
ReplyDeleteWow, the skirt looks so good! You did an amazing job! Definitely looking forward to your next project :D
ReplyDeleteOMG! What a coincidence! I made the exact same type of skirt this weekend too =) It's not the greatest thing but I love it. Luckily, my Mom helped me quite a bit. I agree - the trickiest part was the zipper. You did great tho. I love the color as well.
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job! The skirt looks great!
ReplyDeleteDang! Good job for your first try!
ReplyDeleteLove the outfit, too! :)
Fantastic job for a beginner! Hope you continue to post your sewing adventures on the blog.

i like that u styled this w/monochromatic colors.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I love how you styled it too.
ReplyDeleteWhat the...?!?! You went from never touching your sewing machine to this beautiful skirt? Why have you been hiding your sewing prowess all this time? Even though I've been sewing for a few years now, making something like this from start to finish with waistband, invisible zipper and all is very daunting. I'm beyond impressed!
ReplyDeleteYou did beautifully! I'm crazy impressed!! It took me forever to make something that didn't look incredibly arts-and-craft-like. Like everyone else, I love how you paired with coral - so pretty!
ReplyDeleteOh and have you tried an invisible zipper foot? I just read about it on a blog and it sounds like it makes the process much easier.
You look beautiful in your pictures. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteIf you get a sec, check out my latest post on my blog.
